Environmentally Friendly Outdoor Pillows DIY♥

Hello, friends!

cher

Ah, Summer! Tis the season for air conditioning BBQ’s, picnics, beach days and  more air conditioning relaxing in the luxurious sunshine! Since I live in the Seattle area, I really do look forward all year to summer. I love making my porch extra inviting so I am more inclined to sit outside and enjoy all that vitamin D!

This pillow idea has been a constant DIY since my very first apartment, and I since I’m sure the summer decorating is starting in your own home, I thought I would share!

I recently re-sparked this idea of mine when I came across this really astounding article from National Geographic about wax worms learning to eat plastic bags! It gave me hope, inspired me, and made me proud that here in Seattle we have decided to nix harmful plastic bags altogether. I myself have been using canvas reusable bags for years, and it is a good feeling knowing those little steps towards being more environmentally conscious make a big impact on our planet in the long run. Even though I try really hard to not use plastic bags, they still somehow creep into my house and land in “that drawer.” Don’t judge me, you have “that drawer,” too!

This DIY is probably the most simple DIY you will ever do, and it is 100% no fail!

All you need are pillow covers and old plastic grocery bags!

Pillow covers are very inexpensive and come in so many cute varieties!

Check out some of these:

All you have to do is select your pillow cover of choice and start stuffing away! I stuff the pillow until it is rigid, but still soft enough to be comfortable. For one 18×18 pillow cover, you should need about 30 to 40 plastic bags to fill it to completion. They are so inexpensive that I don’t mind if they fade a little in the sun, or get an occasional shower. The best part is that the insides are plastic, so they will never mold! They look darling on the porch and you will get the satisfaction of knowing that you saved so many plastic bags from never decomposing in the landfill!

Hooray for recycling!

Fabulous & Budget Friendly Home Decor Stores♥

ebay

This is an exciting day!

I just found out that H&M has an AMAZING collection of home decor goods for close to nothing! Why have I not known about this!?
I was so excited about this discovery, that I wanted to share with you some more awesome, inexpensive home decor stores that I frequent:
1. H&M
H&MLike I said, I just found out about their home decor products, but I am very excited about the products that I have seen so far!
I have about fifty ten items in my shopping bag already!  This hand towel is only $4.95! Some of the throw blankets get a little pricey at $79.95, but that was the only item I saw that was truly expensive. I was shopping for kitchen items and the most expensive item I saw in that category was $14.95, not too shabby! Check it out!

2.Ebay Stores Instyleestore & Litvogues
EBAYIf I don’t buy something at Goodwill, I buy it from Ebay. I am on ebay 24/7.
This Ebay store is called instyleestore and they have GORGEOUS linen and cotton blend pillow covers for under $10.00. Does this excite anyone else?!
I have bought one pillow cover from them. The store is in China, so I am still waiting for my package (two whole days), but I should be getting it any day! All the reviews are between four to five stars, so I have high expectations!  I will let you know how it all works out!

6/29/14*UPDATE* The pillows are gorgeous and GREAT quality. I will be buying more!
ebay2Litvogues is another overseas Ebay store that has great reviews and really pretty pillow covers!
I have not purchased from them yet, but my Ebay watch list is overflowing with their products. They have great reviews and a very reasonable shipping time estimate!

This pillow is $5.99 with FREE shipping!

3. Flea Market Chics
fleamarketchicsI live in Washington, so this may be an unfair advantage, but I know that this boutique sell items over the phone and through Paypal, so shop away!
This store carries a variety of vintage finds and handmade goods, (they sell handmade soap that is WONDERFUL)! Everything is priced to sell and the people who work there are incredibly nice! Win, Win!
I bought a beautiful, white, super old, large, shabby window for $20.00 from this store and it has been the star of my bedroom since! (I will take a photo of it when we move into the new house!)

4. World Market
485327_GONE_TO_THE_BEACH_WOODEN_SIGN_I’m sorry if I sound like a broken record if this is the 1,000th time I have boasted about World Market, but my love for them knows no bounds!
I never leave this store empty handed...ever.zoe

It is a dangerous, dangerous place. I love their sales, and if you become a World Market Explorer you get 20% off coupons all the time in your email!
My favorite items to buy are clocks and wall decor items. This “Gone to the Beach” sign is on sale for $9.74!

6 Ways To Make Your Home Warm, Inviting and Comfortable ♥

bhg

Hello, everyone!
I hope everyone is having a wonderful Friday! I am sorry I have not been posting very often, but I have an exuse some AWESOME news! I AM IN THE PROCESS OF BUYING MY FIRST HOUSE!!!

tumblr_lp2b82AHgS1r0zbwoo1_500

Yes! My husband and I finally had one of our offers accepted! We have filled out a mountain of paperwork and we are just waiting on the inspection. We are thrilled! I am praying everything goes well! In the process of all of this, our lease is up where we currently live and we are crashing with my parents for the next month or so.  It’s hard to create fun decor when all my craft supplies are away in boxes ready to be hauled away to storage.

While I was packing, I was feeling a little depressed. Even though I am very excited about this new chapter, living around the storage boxes is not very homey. You know? Packing away the personal home accents is hard!

However, I got to thinking about the things in a house that make it feel  like a home, they are a very important part of building a comfortable space to reside.

Here is a list of items (and some chores), that create a warm and inviting atmosphere in a home:

pbpillow

1. Accent Pillows

Of all the decor pillows are my favorite! Pillows are so essential in decorating! It is like jewelry for your house. There are so many styles, it would be hard to search for an accent pillow and not find at least one you were not a fan of.  From kooky to elegant there is a pillow for everyone! The plush softness is relaxing and will make your space look a hundred times more relaxing. Plus, each pillow adds character which makes your house look more like you.

Pillows are everywhere, so you don’t have to look far. I make most of my own, but a few of my favorite places to buy them are World Market, JCP, Target, Pottery Barn, and TJMaxx. I am a pillow addict!

bbw 2. Candles

A candle is romantic, relaxing and the soft light creates a beautiful atmosphere.  I have candles going in my house 24/7. A double whammy, candles also show your personality through the scent you choose. I am partial to florals and citrus scents.  I love to buy candles at Bath& Body Works, Yankee Candle Co. and Harry & David Candles, (when I can find them…tricky business! Sometimes TJMaxx will have them). I have nothing against Scentsy or the wax melters, (I have one!) I just don’t think its the same as a romantic candle flickering in dim lighting. If you have small kids, Scentsy is a great option for home fragrance, but maybe have a candle in the bedroom?  It’s a wonderful tiny luxury!

bhg 3. Fresh Flowers

As a florist, I am a little biased, but it does not make it any less true! Fresh flowers are an incredible mood booster. They make any space look fresh and inviting. You don’t have to have a fancy florist make you an arrangement, (don’t tell my boss I said that)! You don’t even need a fancy vase. Any container can be used to hold a few pretty stems. Mason jars, old wine bottles, recycled spaghetti jars etc. are all perfectly acceptable! Trader Joes, in my opinion, has the best cut flowers. The prices are excellent! Pick a long-lasting flower like Alstromeria or Carnations. If you pick up roses, make sure you pick ones that are barely opened or “bloomed.” They will last longer. Make sure to also strip the leaves and give them a fresh-cut before you place them in clean, room-temp water.

4. A Cute Apron

Sure it’s easy to go about the house in your 10-year-old sweatshirt and sweatpants, but wouldn’t it be more fun to sport a cute apron? I think so! I am a sucker for aprons. Before I was a florist I didn’t think of them as anything super exciting, but now that I wear one at work I have to admit I love them! I have a small growing collection of aprons for work and a separate collection for home. I clean, cook and go about my business in a super cute apron that makes me feel put together, but still comfy.  I also don’t feel as embarrassed and grungy if someone comes to the door unexpectedly. I wear a simple cotton dress or yoga pants with my cute apron, but you can wear whatever you want under it obviously, it’s all good! Buy at any home store, I like finding vintage ones on Ebay!

shabby 5.  Make The Bed

What would you rather sleep in: A beautifully made hotel bed or a sloppy mess of a bed with the sheets half off? The answer is obvious. Make your bed! The bedroom is your sanctuary. The bedroom should be a personal, gorgeous place of rest and relaxation.  When the bed is made it makes the whole space look more organized and tidy. It is really hard to relax when the bed is a mess.  Also make sure you clean all your bed linens AT LEAST once a week. You spend 6-9 hours in your bed each night so it needs to be clean! Making the bed is a free practice that will really pay off.

lemon 6. A Wreath

A pretty wreath or door ornament to greet your guests is a wonderful way to make your house look inviting. If you don’t like wreaths, try a potted plant! I have a spring wreath tutorial that you can check out here if you would like to make your own! If not, I always find beautiful wreaths at Joann Fabrics.

My two cents! Im sure I could go on forever, but those six are the most important! I hope you enjoyed my advice on making a house a home. Is there a particular item you love to help make your house inviting and warm? Until next time!
